The purpose of Zabava Folk Song Theatre is to popularise Russian folklore in Australia. We would like our children to learn more about Russian history and culture through enjoyable musical classes. We sing, dance, play games and celebrate traditional events in the way they were celebrated by our ancestors. We also learn to play traditional musical instruments like kugikly (pan pipes), zhaleika (hornpipe), balalaika, violin, guitar, garmon (Russian button accordion), tambourine and wooden spoons.
We put together fragments of the rituals of calendar holidays. So far this is Kolyada and Maslenitsa, but we plan to reflect other holidays and rites. The ensemble consists of children 8-15 years old, together with some parents. We sing together with children and as a separate group of adults. Some of our young performers are so passionate that they go on stage as soloists.
